Make Your Own Headboard
While putting the finishing touches on this headboard, I burnt a couple of my fingers with my hot-glue gun. Be forewarned, hot-glue burns HURT! Still, at this very moment, while I sit and type, each time I hit the keys, I feel the sting.
BUT that's not even the worst of my injuries from this past week... On Monday morning, while at the gym, I sprained my ankle. I mean S.P.R.A.I.N.E.D my ankle BAD! BE forewarned, spraining your ankle HURTS even WORSE than a hot-glue burn! Seriously, I wondered if I broke something. I did have a doctor check it out and it doesn't seem to be broken. I still have swelling, it's UGLY and bruised and I'm still limping, but after tons of icing and LOTS of sitting, I'm on the mend.
So anyway, I haven't accomplished as much as I would have liked to, this past week. ALTHOUGH, I did have a garage sale yesterday and today, with a few of my friends! Which I plan to post on real soon!! We were planning the sale for last weekend and postponed it, due to weather. SO, I had everything prepared ahead of time. All my going through and pricing was complete before I hurt my ankle, which was a good thing, because there was NO way I could have done all of that, while hobbling along. My friends did the majority of the garage sale work and I tried to help as much as I could.
Anyway... enough about how I've been beating myself up... Let's get on to this post:
A while back, I decided I wanted to make a headboard for my son's "World Traveler Room." This is the first headboard I've ever made and although it isn't perfect, it'll do for now.
I started with a piece of plywood that was cut to size, an egg crate mattress topper, my staple gun and some navy blue material that I found on sale at Jo-Ann Fabrics.

. This is where I grabbed the idea of using an egg crate mattress topper, instead of expensive foam. LOVED the idea and went with it!
Here is the HOW-TO:
Lay your plywood out, lay the mattress topper on top of the plywood, cutting it to the desired size.
I wrapped the foam around the top and the bottom of the plywood, and stapled it onto the back of the plywood.
If I were to do this again I would wrap the foam around the sides as well.
I had a full size mattress topper and only used one layer of foam, because I have PLANS for the rest of it. To make a thicker, more cushioney headboard you can simply double the layers of foam.
I cut the material to fit and wrapped it around all sides of the plywood and stapled the material on the backside.
...and finished the front with cording, attaching it with nail heads that I had on hand. I covered some of
with material and hot-glued the buttons on top of the cording.
I attached two D-Ring Hangers, on the back to hang it onto the wall.
and VOILA - made my very first headboard. I've always LOVED fabric headboards and have always wanted to make one. This is the only bedroom in my home, that didn't have a headboard. BUT now it does and I LOVE it in this room and so does my oldest son. The other day, he told me: "Mom, now my bed is so comfy!" It probably helps that he also received a "tempur-pedic like" mattress topper, that my husband and I no longer use.
