Organized Garage Sale - Tips & Tricks
If you’re looking to declutter, make a little extra cash, and maybe meet a few neighbors in the process, hosting a garage sale is a classic win. But pulling off a smooth, profitable garage sale takes more than just dragging your old stuff to the driveway.
A little planning goes a long way. Organizing a garage sale is a great excuse to declutter, earn some cash, and connect with your community. With the right prep, you might even enjoy it!
I’ve shared many tips on hosting an organized garage sale here on the blog in the past and I’ve even created a garage sale planner for you to download and print from home to have a super organized sale.
Here’s how to plan it right.
Step 1: Snag My Planner and Pick the Perfect Date
Before anything else, grab my planner. Organization is key to a smooth sale! I recommend starting with my Garage Sale Planner. It’s packed with checklists, pricing guides, and signage to keep you on track. Use code: SPRINGSAVINGS for 10% off!
Now, pick a weekend that works for you. Saturdays tend to draw the biggest crowds, especially in spring and early summer. Avoid major holidays or local events that might steal your traffic.
Step 2: Get the Word Out
Promotion is everything. A few ways to get noticed:
Post on Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, and Newspapers
Put up easy-to-read signs at nearby intersections (big arrows, large print)
Let friends and neighbors know—word of mouth still works!
Step 3: Prep and Price Your Items
Declutter with purpose. Group your items by category (kids’ stuff, tools, home goods) to make browsing easier.
Pricing tips:
Be realistic—garage sale shoppers love bargains
Use stickers or masking tape for prices
Consider bundle deals (e.g., 3 books for $5)
Step 4: Set Up for Success
Use tables, blankets, or shelves to display items neatly
Have plenty of small bills and coins for change
Keep plastic grocery bags on hand for buyers
Consider having someone help you out—it gets busy fast!
Step 5: Make It Fun and Friendly
Play music, offer lemonade, and chat with customers. Kids can even run a lemonade stand!
Step 6: Deal With Leftovers
Have a plan for unsold items: donate to local charities, list big items online, or offer them for free curbside.
