Hutch/Bookcase Makeover
I recently took an old hutch/bookcase that I found on Facebook Marketplace and gave it a little makeover with some paint.
This piece wasn’t in horrible shape, but I knew a little DIY magic would help it stand out in my space.
If you're thinking of doing the same, here’s a quick step-by-step guide on how I painted my marketplace hutch/bookcase — and how you can do the same!
Before I go into the step by steps, take a look at the before and after photos:
Before
After
If you’ve been around my blog for a while, you know that I’ve painted so many pieces, I have literally lost track of how many. I love to transform a piece of furniture with paint! You can check out more of the painted pieces that I have posted about on the blog right HERE.
Here is what I do:
1. First things first… Pick the Right Paint
My all time favorite paint for furniture is Farmhouse Paint. Hands down, no questions asked. I would recommend this paint (and I have) over and over again. It’s easy to apply and doesn’t require a whole lot of prep work or sealing in the end. I painted this piece with Farmhouse Paint Black Noir color.
2. Prep The piece
With this paint, you don’t need to do a whole lot of prepping, so just clean it up: Wipe down the surface to get rid of any dust or grime.
Lightly sand if needed: Give it a quick once-over with sandpaper to remove any rough patches or old paint if you need to. Often times I just wipe it clean and start painting!
3. Paint it
I began with the edges and details using my favorite painting brush. I rolled the larger flat surfaces with a small roller. You can find my favorite painting brushes and rollers in my Amazon Favs Here. After one coat dried, I added a second coat of paint and let that dry.
5. the hardware
I took off the old knobs and spray painted them with gold spray paint — a small touch that made all the difference!
Someday I may paint the inside white. But for now, this is how it looks and I like it.
Painting furniture from marketplace or second-hand stores is a fun and cost-effective way to add personality to your home. Plus, it’s satisfying to take something old and give it a fresh new look!
May you be a little inspired.
Until Next Time,
DaNita
